All'interno del testo tre bellissime incisioni a piena pagina che raffigurano delle scene religiose (l'annunciazione, la crocifissione, la resurrezione). Bella vignetta al frontespizio. Back cover has the same recessed panel without the inset. Gilt turn-ins. All edges gilt. . Octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. Intermittent light foxing and minor marginal tear on p. 96. First few gatherings have been re-inserted. Contemporary ink inscription on front flyleaf. A very good copy and an example of a vulnerable deluxe trade binding that has remarkably survived.

A complete set of what must have been one of the most impressive bibliographical publications of 19th Century France - indeed Europe. Copiously illustrated with facsimiles and colour reproductions, (many of which are fold-out and impressively large) of remarkable manuscripts and bindings throughout history. In contemporary 1/4 calf with raised bands and blue labels at one stage this set must have been particularly eye-catching but sadly time has taken its toll somewhat. In various states of condition ranging from Good/VG to Fair only. Most with substantial off-setting in places, many tissue-guards missing from the plates. Some occasional spotting and damp-staining to odd volumes but not terribly so. The bindings are overall in Fair condition with several split (and one entirely loose) backstrips and corners. Complete with all 27 illustrations: Six full-page colored plates, Eleven full-page B&W woodblock plates, and Ten B&W woodblock prints within the text. The text is flawless, no inscriptions, spotting, or tears, and is clean, bright and tight. The bindings have no wear or damage and all of the edges are in bright gilt. This is a pristine copy in a very attractive Fine binding by Bayntun of Bath.

Full aluminum with decorative cutouts and onlays. Spine sticked. Black and gold endpapers. . Small quarto. Color-illustrated on almost every page using a combination of linoleum block printing, ink, pochoir, and colored pencil, along with mounted fabric. Printed on Zerkall Book Laid paper in six different type faces. A fine copy.
