With 60 lovely watercolour plates by Ella Du Cane, each with notes by Florence Du Cane printed on their tissue guards, and with two folding maps. 8vo, in the publisher's original beautifully decorated tan cloth, the spine and upper cover with gilt lettering and pictorial decorations in blue, russet, and green in Egyptian motif, t.e.g. xv, 282, 8 ads. pp. A very attractive copy, the text quite clean and solid, the binding in very nice condition with some uniform mellowing of the cloth at the spine panel and some general mellowing from age. FIRST EDITION OF THIS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK ON EGYPT. The text along with Ms. Du Cane's very fine paintings capture both day to day life in the modern cities as well as the ruins and excavations of the ancient dynasties.
The artist, Ella Du Cane, came into artistic prominence in 1893 when she exhibited at an exhibition of the prestigious New Society of Painters in Water Colours. Queen Victoria took a personal interest in her work, acquiring 26 of Du Cane's works between December 1895 and August 1898. With success came opportunities for travel, along with this work on Egypt she also did paintings for A. & C. Black books on Japan and Italy.
