About This Item

East Hampton, NY: Harper's Books, 2012. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. East Hampton, NY: Harper's Books, 2012. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of Kazuo Kitai's finest achievements. Limited Edition of 1000 copies. Published as a hardcover original only. The Limited Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by John Gossage: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with red titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Kazuo Kitai. His Essay has been translated from the Japanese by Hiroshi Masaki. Interview between John Gossage and Harper Levine. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the photographer's (very belated) debut exhibition in the United States, held at Harper's Books East Hampton, New York from August 18 through October 1, 2012. Presents Kazuo Kitai's "Barricade". Gripping, terrifying, unforgettable protest images, arranged by John Gossage in his readily identifiable and inimitable book design style. "A collection of Kitai's previously unpublished protest images shot in 1968 Tokyo at the height of the student rebellion. Juxtaposes photographs from the Barricade Series with scanned images from Kitai's first book, 'Resistance' " (Publisher's blurb) . Kazuo Kitai's imagery reminds and makes one think of Gilles Peress' "Telex Iran: In The Time of Revolution" in its evocation of The Crowd, in all its subversive and overwhelming power. Like Peress', Kitai's images represent the closest thing photography has ever come to capturing the uniquely modern phenomenon of proto-revolutionary groups in action. "To the crowd in its nakedness, everything is a Bastille" (Elias Canetti) . An absolute "must-have" title for Kazuo Kitai collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen (in Japanese characters) on the Back Limitation Page by Kazuo Kitai. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO GILLES PERESS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0615416780.

About Modern Rare

ModernRare.com is exclusively an online bookstore. We believe this is the best way to satisfy our customers' expectations. We specialize in modern firsts, photography, the arts, and erotica. You will also find a fine selection of signed copies, limited editions, and memorabilia because our ultimate goal is to deepen the pleasure of collecting books. We carry titles that we ourselves like and believe in -- books that we think will excite, enchant, and endure.
