Together with l'Azoth, ou le Moyen de Faire l'or Cache des Philosophes, and Traicte de la Nature de l'Oeuf des Philosophes by Bernard, Comte de Treues [Bernadus Trevisanus]. Paris: Iermie et Christophe Perier, 1624. 8vo (small). First French Edition, printed from the Latin Edition of 1599. Recently rebound in sympathetic full calf, with decorative gilt tooling and red leather spine label. Dentelle edges. With original marbled endpapers. Vol. I: 176 p.p.; Vol. II: 194 p.p. Features woodcut title-page, plus [15] alchemical illustrations and symbols. Volume III: 64 p.p., [3]. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown of "Bibliotheque de Mr. Jourdan Secretaire de Mgnr. L'ancien Eveque de Limoges Precepteur des Enfans de France." Embossed heraldic device on front fly-leaf of two plumed helmets above shields, with horseshoes. A second heraldic device embossed along margin, of peerage styled helmet, and shield with six-swords (three on each side). Small nick to fore-edge of upper title page and tiny perforation to bottom page. Light staining, discoloration to leaves. Some markings in light red, otherwise a very good copy. The first book, the 12 Keys of Basilius Valentinus, contains twelve chapters on the process of creating the Philosopher's Stone. The second book, Azoth, refers to the universal solvent, or life force necessary for transmutation, and also refers to the element Mercury. The third book by Bernardus Trevisanus, is an alchemical essay on the nature of the Philosopher's Egg.
