London: J.D. Potter, 1893. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19" x 25.5".<br/><br/> Engraving of Tunis and its surrounding waters. Based on French government surveys from 1882-86. Originally published in 1888 by Captain W.J.L. Wharton and distributed by sea chart dealer J.D. Potter. Includes topographical details of land as well as railways and the city of Carthage. Hand coloring depicts gas lit buoys and lighthouses. Soundings in fathoms. Good overall condition with narrow margins. Minor chipping along left edge, and top margin disrupts border along top edge. Image is sharp and clean with only slight scuff marks in the Lake of Tunis.<br/><br/>

The first voyage of James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. It was the first of three Pacific voyages of which Cook was the commander. The aims of this first expedition were to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun (3 - 4 June of that year), and to seek evidence of the postulated Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land". London. Published at the Admiralty 30th June , 1887. Lithographed map, approx 32 x 41 cms, colour-printed, by Malby & Sons under the superintendence of Captain W.J.L. Wharton, separately issued priced 3d. Folded for use, with a couple of small tears at the folds. Together with: card list of the British fleet present; programme; small printed request for tickets. Apparently annotated in the hand of Surgeon Commander Ross C.I.E., who was involved in the organisation of celebrations on the Isle of Wight. Ross viewed the celebrations from H.M.S. Jumma, one of the ships appropriated to officials and visitors. Before the event he pasted clippings from the Naval and Military Gazette and other sources detailing the arrangements to the programme and the verso of the map. Map
