About This Item

Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: Harpercollins, 1988. In a clear protective Brodart mylar cover. Author's highly praised debut novel that follows the adventures of Taylor Greene, a young woman who having grown up poor in rural Kentucky, buys an old car and heads west. A touch of wear to bottom corners, a hint of soiling to bottom text block, tiny nick to bottom edge of front board, light creasing, wear to head of dj spine. Despite minor flaws, a beautiful copy. . SIGNED Bookplate Laid-in. First Edition, First Printing. Near Fine/Fine.

The Bean Trees , first published in 1988, is the first book written by Barbara Kingsolver and was followed by a sequel, Pigs in Heaven . Taylor Greer hightails it out of Kentucky as soon as she gets a car, refusing to be just another small-town girl.  She soon finds herself in Oklahoma near Cherokee territory, and in a parking lot, a desperate and frightened woman hands Taylor a Cherokee toddler and leaves. Taylor and the child, named Turtle, keep moving out west and try to find somewhere to put down roots and grow. British Fantasy Award (1988)
