London: George Virtue, [1855]. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. William H. Bartlett. With 88 [including title page and vignette and map] steel engravings within a marbled calf leather binding with gilt tooling this is a beautifully presented book. The accomplished engravings are varied, including scenery, buildings, people and activities as well as a map. Whilst Miss Pardoe's text may be somewhat dry by today's standards, Bartlett's [RA, 1809-1854] engravings stand the test of time and are wonderful. First published in 1838, this edition from [1855] has an appendix written to take account of scenary that had "gained notoriety in connection with" the ongoing Crimean War. There are an additional 8 steel engravings by Bartlett, the last ones he completed prior to his death in 1854. The high quality engravings take in a fountain at Galata, a cooling room in a Hammam, a public Khan and best of all a coffee kiosque! Small original bookbinder's stamp on ffep [R.R. Bellamy, Burton on Trent]. 172pp. 28x22 cm. Corners worn, edges rubbed and some scuffing to backstrip. Occasional brown spotting throughout.
