About This Item

London: Printed By Vernor & Hood; Longman & Rees, Cuthell & Martin and Others.... Good+ with no dust jacket. 1802. First Edition. Hardcover. One Volume in the series - 'Beauties of England and Wales'. This series originally published in 25 volumes. This volume 3 forms CUMBERLAND, The ISLE of MAN and DERBYSHIRE. The Isle of Man is not part of the title on the spine but is present and consists of 42 pages, 1 Plate and a wood-engraved tail-piece. The Volume is bound in full leather with 5 raised bands, Gilt titling on 2 labels and gilt decoration to each compartment. Probably contemporary or near contemporary bindings. The spine has some flaws/damage, splitting to the edges of the spine. Some small chipping/repair-work with some tiny loss to the head/tail of the spine, but hinges holding despite some splits and overall is an attractive book. ALL Edges Marbled. The volume has marbled endpapers and 2 former owners labels (marked/torn) to the front pastedown - just the printed names in fancy old type - Bevington Gibbins and, below, his son - Frederick J. Gibbins ( Bevington Gibbins born 1792 in Aston, Birmingham, married Rebecca Tregelles, The Tregelles-Price family were owners of the Iron Works in Neath Abbey. ). On the ffep opposite is the bookplate of 'Neath Antiquarian Society'. The volume has a copper engraved Frontispiece and engraved title, followed by a printed title. No plate list. (4 pp) + 552pp + (10pp 'List of Books') + 11 pp Index + 1 page Corrections/Amendments. + 31 plates. Plus the copper engraved b/w frontispiece + engraved title. It seems as if different paper stock was used for different sections of the book as some page blocks are very lightly browned but uniformly, and others generally very clean, tho all text readable at all times. Some browning to the pages opposite the plates, and a few plates have some foxing/patching to the margins, 'tho for most part this volume, and the plates, is/are particularly clean. At the time of listing I have other volumes in this series, in uniform bindings, but in various conditions - please enquire if interested. See Images. ; The Beauties of England and Wales; Large, Thick, 8vo 9" - 10" tall .
