Small folio, 34 x 27 cm. 40 pages of introductory text with eighty-four text figures. Twenty-four chromolithograph plates, many are double-paged with explanatory text, the latter printed by H. Benecke. Brilliant example of 19th century American color printing. Landscape designs by the author and others, including Olmstead and Vaux, E.O. Schwaegerl, I.A. Pilat, E.A. Baumann, et al. KARPEL B551. "The author came from Hartford, Conn. and was the superintendent and designer of the city park and of Cedar Hill Cemetery. Both these locations are illustrated in handsome color plates, together with a number of private estates and parks, mostly from southern New England and New York."
