Thick small 8vo. in brick colored cloth stamped in gilt, leather title label letterd in gilt on spine. 698 pp. plus 6 pp. publisher's ads at rear. Illustrated with nearly three hundred full page engravings of ancient, modern, and biblical syies, and with folding maps. Firm in its binding though the hinges are split, some wear and creasing to the spine lable from opening this thick volume. Small ownership stamp on half-title. Interior clean and complete. Affixed to the front pastedown there is a May,1881 dated Queen's Prize presentation bookplate from the Science And Art Department of the Committee Of Council on Education.

Prize inscription dated Xmas 1878 on front fixed endpaper. Head and foot of spine rubbed and worn; corners of boards rubbed; the front endpapers and the coloured frontispiece are stained; a good copy.

Includes Two Papers by the Rev. J.G. Wood, M.A., F.L.S., 'Australian Weapons and Implements' double-column closely printed pp. 433-438, 525-534 with accompanying plates, 'Australian Weapons', and 'Skirmishing' - showing the weapons in use. Some gatherings loosened; and a few fore edges frayed; otherwise very good.

London: Ward, Lock, and Tyler, 1868. Leather. Fair. 8" by 5.5". Not Stated. An uncommon edition of 'Beeton's Boy's Annual', in leather binding. 'Beeton's Annual' was a popular annual publisher for boys in the nineteenth century. Including a colour frontispiece plate and many in-text illustrations. The work is affixed with two other works entitled Cudjo's Cave and The Three Scouts, making for a fine and broad example of Victorian children's literature. In half-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally, sound. There is significant wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip, with cracking to joints, lifting and loss to backstrip and prominent tenderness to hinges, resulting in detached but present endpages. Internally, there is tenderness to the binding throughout, though the pages are largely holding firm. Pages are bright and spotted and marked throughout, with loss to the tissue guard of the frontispiece and an ink inscription to title page. Fair

Several gatherings and illustrations were loose, so I glued them carefully and priced the book accordingly. A marvelous collection of stories, tricks, projects, and puzzles to delight any serious young person. All edges gilt. Hinges cracked but holding. 552 pp. plus catalog bound in..

First edition, 2 volumes, large 8vo; text printed in double columns; contemporary three quarter red morocco over marbled boards, gilt-ruled and lettered spine in six compartments, raised bands, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; spines darkened, general shelf wear, light scuffing; contemporary ownership inscription on flyleaves, textblocks fine. Very good over all. From the preface: "The intention of the Projector of the present Book of Poetry was to collect and publish as many poems, or parts of poems, as could be comprised within one large and handsome, but not unwieldy Volume". A brief section devoted to American poetry included at the end of Vol. II. The editor, Samuel Orchart Beeton (1831-1877), incapable of fitting all his favorite poetry into one volume, is best known as the publisher of the first British edition of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as well as his wife's cookbook and guide on running a proper Victorian household, "Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management"

Full contemporary dark green moire patterned cloth, gilt stamped spines (rubbed at corners, slight foxing throughout). Good-very good. 2 volumes (Volume II incomplete). Authors include Rev. J.G. Wood. Spine title: Boy's Own Magazine; at foot of page [2] (Vol. I): "New Series. - No. 1, Vol. I". Volume II ends at page 464; with the last 304 pages of "Volume I" included. Notable for the detailed illustrations, and the literary, historical and scientific content (including a "History of the British Navy" and "The Adventures of Reuben Davidger; Seventeen Years and Four Months a Captive Among the Dyaks of Borneo", among others), plus various games, puzzles, scientific experiments, etc..
