KIRKUS REVIEW

This third novel in Price's Savannah Quartet is the work of a writer devoted to the history of antebellum Georgia; it picks up in 1842, three years after To See Your Face Again (1985), as various members of the Mackay, Stiles and Browning families establish homesteads along the Etowah River, upcountry. Here, fussy Mark and Caroline Browning, prominent Savannahians, hold their breath to see how their headstrong daughter, Natalie, a former southern belle, will fare as a frontier wife, married to the builder Burke Latimer. Then their young son, Jonathan, falls in love with a half-Cherokee gift, Mary McDonald, and sickly Caroline is forced to introduce her to stuffy Savannah society. In the meantime, Eliza Anne Stiles, daughter of grande dame Eliza Mackay, raises her brood in the upcountry, but must leave the wilderness behind to follow her husband, W.H., first to Washington City, where he sits in the US Congress, and then to Vienna when he's posted to the embassy there. Mackay family friend, Robert E. Lee, wanders in and out of the story, lamenting the death of his old army buddy, Captain Jack Mackay, and galvanizing dinner-table chit-chat with his abolitionist ideology. The novel closes some ten years before the Civil War, with the stage set for the quartet finale. Peopled by a cast of relentlessly nice characters, this is first and foremost family history, with a glazing of pre-War politics, too laborious for anyone besides the Savannah series faithful.
