About This Item

Leipzig. Very Good-. 1773. Second Edition. Hardcover. viii, 294 pages; Contents complete and unmarked in original paper-covered boards; paper chipped all along spine; paper toned, but supple remnants f a pper covering adhered to endpapers. OCLC 603521068 Engraved frontispiece portrait of Johann Friedrich Struensee. Johann Friedrich Struensee (1737 – 1772) was a German physician, philosopher and statesman. He became royal physician to the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark and a minister in the Danish government. He rose in power to a position of "de facto" regent of the country, where he tried to carry out widespread reforms. Struensee was a follower of the Enlightenment and as Denmark’s “dictator”, he passed more than 2200 laws (Struensee’s “Reformstorm”) from 1769 to 1772, which limited the powers of the nobility, changed labor laws, and instituted freedom of the press, among other things. His affair with Queen Caroline Matilda ("Caroline Mathilde") caused a scandal, especially after the birth of a daughter, Princess Louise Augusta, and was the catalyst for the intrigues and power play that caused his downfall and dramatic death. In 1772, the king’s mother with the help of the disenfranchised aristocracy had Struensee arrested, tried for treason, and executed. .
