New York: The Modern Library. Very Good- in Fair dust jacket. 1946. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Stated First Modern Library Edition, 1946 (confirmed). A rather scarce Modern Library edition of author's heartwarming 1944 novel which is set in Sicily during the latter stages of World War II. Includes a foreword by the author. This work was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1945. --- In Toledano spine 8 / pale green cloth / gilt titling stamped on green cover & spine blocks / green topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style h. Verso advertises 316 titles in ML catalog. ML #16.3. --- With a small area of soiling to front panel, a tear to leaf near back of volume, and prior owner's inked name to front paste-down, otherwise a tightly-bound, clean copy. Very fragile dust jacket with no shortage of chips, tears and creasing, water/tea ring to front panel and price-clipped flap; but remaining mostly intact and protected in new removable archival mylar protector.; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall) ; viii, 269 pages .


A Bell for Adano is a film directed by Henry King starring John Hodiak and Gene Tierney. The film was adapted from the novel A Bell for Adano by John Hersey, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945. The story concerns Italian-American U.S. Army Major Joppolo, who is placed in charge of the town of Adano during the invasion of Sicily.
