True First Edition, in publisher's cadet blue-gray cloth with floral decorations on the front cover, spine, and back cover, most likely issued in an edition of only 1000 copies. In addition to the correct binding, all other issue points correct, with the date on the title page, the first issue dedication "To The Wife Of My Youth" in two lines and "be-became" on p. 11, lines 37-38. Very Good Minus, 1/4" loss to cloth at spine ends, cloth darkened and soiled, edges rubbed, period prior owner book plate front paste down, some pages with spotting, toning, and soiling, not affecting legibility. Binding sound, a collectible copy. Basis for the classic epic film of 1959, starring Charlton Heston, the winner of 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. Laid in is a publisher's cabinet card of Lew Wallace, compliments of the Bowen-Merrill Company, undated, circa 1893, as last title listed for Wallace is "The Prince of India". Norwalk, Ct: The Easton Press, 1967. Reprint . Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. pp: 138. Bound in full grey leather covered boards elaborately decorated with the letter 'H' stamped in gilt designed by Peter Winfield Johnson. The book includes raised bands to the spine, gilt edges, frontispiece, and satin endpapers. The illustrations by Legrand were originally in the 1939 Limited Editions Club publication. The text of this edition is also from the 1939 publication which was derived from the Second Quarto of 1604 and the First Folio edition of 1623. It contains the old style spelling and punctuation of the earlier printings. The size of the text block is almost exactly the same as that of the First Folio. The paper was made at the Glatfelter Paper Mill in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania. Laid in is a four-page booklet on the historical context of this publication.
