The author's careful research and depth of detail reveal as much about his own time as of the time he writes about. Brown cloth binding with gilt titles on spine, beveled edges, cream end papers. Cover worn and scrubbed, binding splitting at spine, corners and spine ends bumped, interior pages tanning with a few stains, small chips in leading edge of title page, front free end paper missing, penciled notation on front and back fixed end papers.
