- Used
undated. later than the other 1816 letter.. Some minor loss to rear not seriously affecting legibility of text. Four sides, four sides written, folded once to 225mm high x 185mm wide. This letter places Fairbairn in London at the time of writing. He relates information relating to the difficulties of supplying tobacco from the Cape to the local market in competition to that from Virginia. Reveals that he almost accepted a position in New South Wales, and was actively considering the West Indies, planning to leave England in the winter. Great expectations for the prospects of NSW which was occupying public attention with the departure of a commission to investigate the future of the colony. John Fairbairn was studying at Edinburgh University and finished there in 1815. There are few records of his activities for the 2 years following this until his departure to the Cape Colony. Scans and transcription on request.
