About This Item

New York:: Dodd, Mead,, 1895.. Hardcover first edition -. Very good light green cloth with a dark green border and decoration on front cover, gilt lettering on front and spine (gift card from Christmas 1896 affixed to front pastedown, previous owner's name) . First American edition. The first, and most popular, book by this Scottish author and minister, published under the pen name of Maclaren. A collection of stories of Scottish rural life, which combined humor with pathos and a liberal use of Scots dialogue. The title of this book alludes to the Jacobite song ("There grows a bonnie brier bush in our Kailyard") and the term "Kailyard School" (kailyard is a small kale, or cabbage, kitchen garden attached to a cottage) was applied to a group of Scots writers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who were considered to be overly sentimental by their critics - or perhaps just too widely popular. 317 pp.
