Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, London, 1882. First edition - complete in three volumes. Miller & Matthews' primary printing and binding. 8vo. 287pp, 294pp and 294pp. Green cloth, lettered in gold at the spines with a black- and gold-stamped decoration to the upper boards. Decorated endpapers. The bindings of all three volumes shaken and quite tender, cracked at a number of gatherings but holding. Spine heads rubbed and with just a touch of light chafing to the corner tips. Endpapers a little browned, with a touch of light spotting to the edges, and to preliminary and concluding leaves. Former owner name and date (1938) neatly inked to a blank flyleaf in each volume. Really quite a bright if tender set of Jefferies' boyhood classic, the sequel to 'Wood Magic' (1881): really quite uncommon in this primary green binding (there is some considerable debate over the priority between the green and brown bindings, and here I bow to George Miller's proven scholarship in deducing the green set over the brown - see Miller & Matthews B15.1). Produced in a likely print run of between 750 and 1,000 copies. Only the second such set we have had in over a decade.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.

Description:
This is a complete 2-volume 1st U.S. Edition set of "Bleak House" by Charles Dickens. 1853 1st U.S. Edition; Harper & Brothers; New York. Both volumes feature full-page facing illustrations by H.K. Browne. BLEAK HOUSEOften considered Charles Dickens's masterpiece, Bleak House blends together several literary genres—detective fiction, romance, melodrama, and satire—to create an unforgettable portrait of the decay and corruption at the heart of English law and society in the Victorian era. Opening in the swirling mists of London, the novel revolves around a court case that has dragged on for decades—the infamous Jarndyce and Jarndyce lawsuit, in which an inheritance is gradually devoured by legal costs. As Dickens takes us through the case's history, he presents a cast of characters as idiosyncratic and memorable as any he ever created, including the beautiful Lady Dedlock, who hides a shocking secret about an illegitimate child and a long-lost love; Mr. Bucket, one of the first detectives to… Read More
