Hardcover volume, illustrated throughout with full-page and in-text black and white illustrations, 572 pages, 9 x 6 inches, decorative gilt-embossed cloth covered boards (hardbound). Binding is firm, but damp has caused puckering to spine of book and front and rear covers; wear to binding extremities. Occasional spotting to text, but overall clean and bright. Good condition. Title page illustration by Thomas Nast, interior illustrations by A. R. Waud et al. Pencil notations on several pages of Chapter XXX ("Salt Lake - the City of the Future"). Chapters focus on the author's travels "Beyond the Mississippi" between 1857 and 1866. A folded map (8 1/2 x 11 inches) at the front of the volume depicts "the Region Between the Mississippi and the Pacific" with a rail line in various states of construction linking Omaha to Sacramento (where ferry service carried passengers to San Francisco. Good overall condition. Text on title page states "more than 200 illustrations, from photographs and original sketches, of the prairies, deserts, mountains, rivers, mines, cities, Indians, trappers, pioneers and great natural curiosities of the new states and territories 1857-1867." .
