Richardson was a journalist and was a reporter for the NEW YORK TRIBUNE during the Civil War, where he covered various battles before being captured by the Confederacy at Vicksburg. BEYOND THE MISSISSIPPI presents his observations from an earlier journey into the West, beginning in 1857. He tells his stories with wit, charm, and more than a bit of hyperbole, accompanied by a huge number of entertaining in-text illustrations. Among other topics, Richardson extensively describes his experiences with the various indigenous peoples of the West, hunting for gold in the Rockies, enjoying the hospitality of his Chinese hosts in San Francisco, the expansion of the railroad, and dedicates two chapters to discussing Salt Lake City and Mormonism.
