(circa1910).. 50 delicate hand coloured collotype plates on high quality stiff card each captioned in English, presented in Japanese embroidered silk covered boards with tassle ties, All edges gilt., patterned gilt endpapers.The hinges of each image have been professionally repaired with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Neat pencilled annotations lower corners, leaves clean and bright. 26 x 38cm. This beautiful album proved very popular and was reprinted a number of times, in some editions all of the plates are in colour, as is the case with this copy, and at other times the edition only shows some plates in colour and while the others are in black and white. The work also appears in editions both with and without 2 maps, later editions in Western bindings. Although his name does not appear in this album it seems highly likely that this album was published by Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929). Introductory text, in French, folded sheets, with 24 loose plates, in a paper-covered salmon chemise with off-white paper label, white cloth spine and cloth ties [spine and ties a little aged]. Light wear at corners, tiny area of bumping to upper tips, interior paper of spine is split, but exterior is sound; plates are immaculate and undamaged. No names or marks. Scarce.

Kobe: Tamamura, Photographer, 1907. Rare First Edition. Circa 1907. Oblong folio album, original decorated silk padded boards, with silver embroidery and ties. All edges gilt. Title page printed on charcoal paper with decorated borders and text in silver, followed by 24 hand coloured collotype photographic prints on cream paper, with tissue guards. The silk boards have been professionally restored. In a very good condition. One of several similar albums produced by the studio of Kōzaburō Tamamura, who was one of the originators in Japan of photographic albums of this kind for tourists. The subject of these photographs include Kyoto, Osaka, Shikoku, with scenes of temples, pagodas, rivers, lakes and Fujiyama etc, with captions in English. 420 mm x 190 mm (16½ x 7½ inches).
