London: Printed for presentation to the Roxburghe Club, and published by Bernard Quaritch, 1977 4to (28 cm), xviii, 415 pp, 24 plates, folding genealogical chart. Publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered spine, top edge gilt (spine slightly sunned). A history of the library established by Alexander Lindsay (1812-1880) and his son Ludovic Lindsay (1847-1913), the 25th and 26th Earls of Crawford. Known as the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, this library evolved over 70 years, from the early 1830s to the turn of the century. At its zenith, it comprised over 100,000 printed books, tens of thousands of documents, and six thousand manuscripts. "Bibliotheca Lindesiana was a vision of the human intellect, an ideal too high for any man to achieve, but one to which two men, father and son, both remarkable attainments, came closer than anyone else, before or since."
