New York: Street & Smith Publications. November/December 1958. First Edition. Digest-size Magazine. Good. Spine crumbling (Nov). Rear cover (Nov) detached with shadow of old tape. "-15" inked on front covers. Interiors tanned but unmarked. Stress tears along hinges. Spine ends chipped.

Poul Anderson's novel The Makeshift Rocket first appeared in print when it was serialized under the title A Bicycle Built for Brew in the November and December 1958 issues of Astounding Science Fiction magazine with cover art (Nov) and ten interior illustrations by H. R. Van Dongen. The story mixes beer, air-tight drums, a talking parrot guaranteed to repeat phrases laced with four-letter indignities, a romance between an English lass and a Scottish soldier, and the need to communicate the fact of the invasion to British authorities on a nearby asteroid in a very humorous tale.
