Description:
Foolscap Press, 2016. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 16 of 100 copies. The Snails is a short story by Patricia Highsmith (author of The Talented Mr. Ripley) about giant snails with huge teeth that inhabit a remote island. When an out-of-shape professor decides to visit the island in hopes of capturing one of the snails in order to secure fame for himself, his plans go awry. A seemingly peculiar topic for a story, it was perfect for Highsmith who kept snails as pets and was known to take them to parties on leaves of lettuce in her handbag. The book is housed in a brick red cloth box with a cast-paper sculpture of a snail shell to the top cover. The book is bound in tan cloth with an illustration of a snail pasted down to the front cover. Within the folds of the accordion structure binding are smaller gatherings of pages, which include the text. Illustrations of snails roaming the island and encountering the professor are printed on the larger pages. An interesting structure, as is frequent with… Read More

Description:
New York: Random House, 1949. First US Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Fair/Good. The early dystopian classic available in the original edition. Stated First Printing. Scarce with author's signature to half-title page. In light blue debossed cloth boards with darker blue cloth spine and silver type. top page ends tinted light blue. Unfortunately, to combat pigment/paper loss common to boards of this edition, a previous owner painted boards blue(but not spine). Some light loss still visible to board ends and corners. Light wear overall with sharp corners. A tiny blue spot to bottom page ends and some very faint smudges to endpapers and paper abrasions to pastedowns. Otherwise clean with tight binding. Would be Very Good if not for aforementioned coloration of boards. Jacket price is price-clipped with some very small chips primarily to top corners, head of spine and top of panels. Crease to front flap with smaler edge crease, some scuffing and spotting to top of rear flap.

Description:
1896 Jules Verne 1ed Facing the Flag Face Drapeau Extraordinary Voyages Hetzel

"Reality provides us with facts so romantic that imagination itself could add nothing to them."
― Jules Verne

Jules Verne published a number of lesser-known science fiction, adventure novels in addition to his high profile works such as 'Twenty Thousand Leagues' and 'Around the World in 80 Days'. One such work was 'Facing the Flag' – one of Verne's numerous books in which the world faced the threat of a weapon of mass destruction!

Note on dating: like many other Verne first editions, the title page included was issued in each edition, including later printings. The dating comes from the ads in the back of the book – note the ads in this volume advertise for the releases in the 1896-1897 print year, making this a true first edition of 'Facing the Flag'!
