Los Angeles.: Recreation Publishing Company.. 1947.. Colorful pictorial map, 17 x 28 inches folding to pamphlet 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches, showing recreational opportunities in the vicinity of Big Bear Lake and Baldwin Lake, California. Designed for mailing with the addition of a 3 cent stamp. 4 1/2 separation at left centrefold, 1 inch separation at lower left fold, light toning on one edge of folded pamphlet not noticeable on the map, otherwise good clean condition. Numerous cartoon-style images of men and women recreating themselves throughout the lake region: camping, bicycling, fishing, skiing, ice skating, etc. plus images of the animal life of the region. At right lower edge an impressive arrow calls attention to a small inset map depicting a grid of streets, the area identified as Big Bear Pines, featuring "Level Improved Wooded Mountain Cabin Sites" ideal for "all summer and winter sports." The lots are marketed by M. Penn Phillips and Associates of Los Angeles, whose real estate development career spanned 50 years and was responsible for some real estate sinkholes — Christmas Valley in Oregon and Salton City in California. Front cover of folded map states "Compliments of Big Bear Pines," and provides Phillips' Los Angeles address and phone number. Verso of map features three smaller maps, the largest being a pictorial 'Reference Map to Resorts,' identifying by name cabins, lodges, clubs, cocktail lounges, the Chamber of Commerce, etc. Two smaller maps depict "Fawnskin" a "progressive new village on the North Shore" and a "Big Bear City Map" showing businesses, resorts, hot springs, etc. A most interesting and very uncommon publication; there appear to be no WorldCat listings for this post-war item, nor is it listed in the inventory of the David Rumsey Map Collection at Stanford University. .
