About This Item

Glasgow, Edinburgh, and London: Blackie and Son, 1855. 5 volumes, complete, in beautiful three quarter green morocco leather bindings. SEE PHOTOS. 1855. 2,950 pages plus 92 full page tissue-guarded steel engraved portraits. This biographical dictionary was first published in 4 volumes in 1834. This is the 1855 "New edition, revised under the care of the publishers, with a supplementary volume continuing the biographies to the present time by the Rev. Thos. Thomson." Pages are clean and unmarked with minimal foxing - probably seldom if ever read. The 5 volumes are uniformly and attractively bound in three quarter green morocco - only a little rubbed. SEE PHOTOS. Each gilt-stamped spine features 5 raised bands. Gilt stamping is as bright and shiny as new. Beautiful green and gold marbled paper endpapers. Top edges gilt. The Tiffany & Co. designed bookplate of Edith M. Clark is on the pastedown endpaper of each volume. SEE PHOTO. Can't be certain, but this seems likely to be from the library of Edith Montcalm Clark who served as Director of Rowan Public Library for nearly 36 years. Named for her is the Edith M. Clark History/Genealogy Room-Rowan Public Library in Salisbury, NC.. New Edition, Revised and Updated. Oversize Hardcover. Very Good condition. Illus. by NOT a library discard. 5 volumes: 2,950 pages + 92 portraits. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
