Frontispiece is a photograph of the author "A bird song". Ex-library with back pocket and the attractive book plate inside the cover (back/front) for the "School of the Holy Child Library, Suffern, New York," as well as bookseller ticket inside back cover. Ends and corners worn, light foxing and some spots (ink?) on the front edge. "John Burroughs [1837-1921] was the most important writer after Thoreau of the nature essay, according to the Library of Congress American Memory Project. A pioneer of the American conservation movement, he is often referred to as the Grand Old Man of Nature." ; 8vo .

Binding is sound. Corners are rounded with moderate wear. Front cover on lower edge has a 2 inch patch that is frayed. Spine is frayed on upper edge..

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1895. This Burroughs classic is in Very Good condition (click on photo). It was bound in the uniform edition common to Burroughs' books, with green cloth covers, and bright die-stamped gilt lettering on the spine, plus the author's gilt signature on the front panel. There is also top-edge gilt. The book has light shelf rubbing at the spine tips and corners. The book is tightly bound, and the text pages are clean and bright. I noticed one page sloppily cut, resulting in a small margin tear. The book measures 5 by 7 1/4 inches and includes 214 pages, with Index.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Binding remains firm. Rough cut pages. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.
