This two volume work is a collection of short biographical sketches of notable sultans and viziers including some of the most iconic Ottoman figure such as Osman I, Bayezid II, Mahomet III, and Ahmed I. It also includes descriptions of Ottoman hussars, infantry, military officers, as well as religious figures and traditions. Note the inclusion of portrait engravings!

William Heinemann Ltd. London. 1961. THREE VOLUMES. Reprint of the 1951 Edition. 8vo. (8 x 5.4 inches). Fine and clean set in the rare Publishers delux leather bindings of full red Morocco. Spines with blind ruled bands and lettered in gilt. Gilt stamped Author's symbol device to the front boards. Blue marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. Each volume with a red silk page marker. Housed in a red cloth covered slip case with marbled paper lining. The spines are a bit rubbed and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive set of this important collection. Only a few sets were issued in these publishers delux leather bindings and they seldom turn up on the market.

Original maroon cloth in good tight clean condition, lettered and ruled in black Top edge slightly dusty Front pastedown with two neat owners' signatures. Endpapers slightly browned. Dustjacket, unclipped, with only minor wear and rubbing to edges. The spine slightly browned. Despite these minor blemishes the volume presents very well. Important first novel by Welsh author Herbert Millingchamp Vaughan, 1870-1948. A rare dystopian science fiction work in which a vellum scroll is found in a metal cylinder in the Andes. This relates the dystopian history of the miniature planet Meleager, where the practice of eugenics ensures the death of defective children and where women have no power or political rights A rare book with a possible influence on Charlotte Haldane's Man's World and feminist dystopian literature generally, especially in the areas of eugenics and male patriarchy

Glasgow; nd (ca.1899): David Bryce & Son. Octavo. 8 volumes in four contained in a box designed to look like a book, illustrated. Copies at the Folger, British Library, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Cambridge, and the National Library of Scotland. Very rare. The Folger copy is in the Vault (C) and the notation is that it is restricted awaiting conservation and only available by special permission. A copy in the box appeared at the Anderson Gallery Auction in 1900. Books are bound in green cloth lettered and decorated in a black floral design with gilt lettering, reproduced on spines, each title with its own title pages, housed within a green cloth covered clamshell resembling a book, gilt lettering to upper board, spine lettered and decorated in a matching floral design with gilt lettering, publisher's full page label listing the contents mounted to the verso of the upper board. A very nice set with wear and old repair to the box.

After he had completed his extensive 'Indian Antiquities' he traced Indian history back to its classical origins. Volume I mainly gives ancient astronomical details from the Hindoo, Hebraic, Phoenician, Egyptian and Greek systems, covering the period between the creation and the flood. Volume II contains the Sanskrit and classical history of India. The imaginative curious plates are showing the Indian Deitees (incarnations of Veeshnu, Creeshna etc.) but also the ancient zodiac from Egypt, oriental zodiac, the 28 Hindoo lunar mansions. XV,(1),582 pp. First edition. - John Campbell (1766-1840), Scottish missionary and explorer, arrived at the Cape in 1812. He inspected the settlements of the London Missionary Society and returned to England with his reports of the colony and its hinterland in 1814. Campbell provides a great deal of information in the appendix including prayers in native languages. 'Few Englishmen at that time had performed such a feat, and on his return his appearances on missionary platforms in London and throughout the country were received with enthusiasm' (DNB). With ample chapters on native's customs. The German physician Ernst Carl Rodschied who practised in Essequibo in the 1790s, found that classical European medicine could not be used in the treatmen of African slaves without making modifications. Rodschied, who apparently had only had limited contact with Africans, thought that slaves had few passions, did not mind being slaves and were really only interested in keeping themselves alive and (if male) in sexual contact with women. He has been called the 'founder of Ethiopian studies in Europe'. Although he never visited the country, Ludolf formed a close working relationship with an Ethiopian monk resident in Rome, himself clearly a highly intelligent man.
