Through the mid-18th-century, large collections of knowledge were relegated to specific areas of study like law, medicine, or religion. However, Denis Diderot's 'Encyclopedie' changed the public's knowledge base as well as setting a standard for future generations of acquiring knowledge on many different subjects. This was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many different named writers. It also was the first encyclopedia to describe work-related topics like agriculture, engineering, cooking, and trade.

This enormous tome is the complete volume of illustrations from the 1768 edition of Diderot and d'Alembert's famous encyclopedia. Artists Proof copy out of the edition of 75 of this attractive set of poems by Graves accompanied by five Hogarth lithographs, each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist. Graves has signed the limitation page. Unbound 54x75cm sheets in ribbon-tied portfolio. The subject matter is Deya in Majorca, where both writer and artist lived as near neighbours. All in VG clean and bright internal order with very slight toning to stock. Some offsetting from images to verso of preceding sheets. Portfolio is bumped to base of spine, in turn affecting internal sheets, but this minor. Portfolio boards a little marked and worn. An attractive and scarce set.
