Yankton, D. T.: Friends of the Mission, 1879. First Edition. 13pp. Disbound. Spine shows light wear. In 1879, accusations of lechery and drunkenness against a missionary to the Santee Sioux in the Dakota Territory exploded in the press. Episcopal priest Samuel D. Hinman, who had labored successfully among the Dakotas for 15 years as a missionary and government translator was abruptly dismissed from his charge by the Board of Missions in early 1878. At the time, Hinman was serving under William H. Hare, The Missionary Bishop of Niobrara, now South Dakota. Hare accused Hinman of "cool calculating evil" and even tried to have him forced off the Indian reservation with the help of the U. S. government agent. Hinman demanded a church trial and was eventually found guilty.
