The subject was proposed by Charles Keeping himself, out of his knowledge and compassion for horses. The original proofs were not acceptable to the publisher or artist, so the edition was scrapped and reprinted. Among his last works; he had a few copies of the reprint with him in the hospital which he showed to visitors with real pride.
