Contains Cullen's longest poem "The Black Christ" and about 45 other, shorter poems. Decorations by Charles Cullen. 110 numbered pps. Previous owner's gift inscription on front pastedown, mostly hidden from view by dj flap. Paper on boards in surprisingly nice condition - only gently rubbed. Paper/foil title labels more heavily rubbed, especially on spine. Very tightly bound. Dust jacket, now protected in archival plastic, has edgewear and light fading to spine. The edgewear consists of four small closed tears and a few tiny chips; the wear is heaviest at spine head. Original price remains on flap. A desirable copy of an important Harlem Renaissance work.. He was a minority owner of the Texas Rangers, he brought Paul Quinn College to Dallas and he helped elect Mayor Ron Kirk, Dallas' first black mayor. The book is inscribed to the late Joe Atkins, another trailblazing Dallasite, who, in 1955, sued North Texas College for admission on the basis of racial discrimination. In addition, there is a bookmark for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ellis and Betty Davis. Ellis Davis was basketball coach of Roosevelt H S in Dallas. They named a stadium after him. The book is in fine, unread condition. The dust jacket has a quarter inch tear at the fold on the back flap and there is minor shelf wear. The book is inscribed, dated and signed on the front free end page. An important book with significant associations.

Small tears at the spine ends, bottom corners a little bumped, else near fine lacking the jacket. Inscribed by Cullen to Afro-Caribbean Harlem Renaissance author Eric D. Walrond: "For Eric, Sincerely - and in Paris, Countee. Oct. 15, 1929." Waldrond, author of *Tropic Death* and an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance, abandoned New York for London in 1928. In 1925, Cullen dedicated his famous poem, *Incident (for Eric Walrond)*, about a racist incident in Baltimore, to his close friend and fellow author. A nice association copy of an important collection of poetry.
