Oxford: Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1954. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Octavo size, 400 pp. Second edition (scarce in dust jacket for the early editions) of this important work on blood groups (blood types), which were first discovered in 1901; by the mid-20th century work on blood groups was progressing at a rapid pace, as noted on this edition's dust jacket - "The four years since publication of the first edition have seen the discovery of a ninth blood group system..." - today, 33 human blood group systems are recognized.

___ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Race and Sanger worked together beginning in the 1940s, they co-authored papers as well as six editions of this work, which were published between 1950 and 1975. They married in 1956 after the death of Race's first wife; Race was Director of the Blood Group Research Unit at The Lister Institute, and Sanger followed him as Director upon his death.

___DESCRIPTION: Navy blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, illustrated throughout with tables and charts, several of which are fold-outs, stated Second Edition both on copyright page and front panel of the dust jacket, 400 pages. Dust jacket is ivory with red lettering, summary of book on front flap, publisher's ads on back panel and back flap.

___CONDITION: Volume is in fine condition, other than a prior owner marking (a code? - "F 5.10") on the front free endpaper; it has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners without rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, the fold-out charts are in fine condition, the gilt on the spine is bright; it has clearly been well protected by its dust jacket. The dust jacket itself is good only, the lower corner of the left panel has been price-clipped, the spine is soiled and the red lettering has faded, there is overall minor edgewear and at the top of the back panel there is considerable wear with one chop approx. one inch wide by one-half inch high.
