Groundbreaking experiments that earned George Whipple the Nobel prize for his discovery that liver fed to anemic dogs reverses the effects of the anemia, leading directly to successful liver treatment of pernicious anemia. "The first treatments for pernicious anemia were devised by George Whipple, who studied anemia in dogs. He was studying the effects of blood loss on dogs, and set out to investigate the effects of diet on anemia. Whipple bled dogs until they became anemic, feeding them special diets and noting the effects on their recovery. He found that dogs which ate large amounts of liver recovered quickly from anemia due to blood loss. He went on to investigate the effects of liver consumption on pernicious anemia, and in 1920 he published a paper [i.e. the present paper] on how eating liver had beneficial effects on sufferers of pernicious anemia" (online at animalresearch.info accessed 10/27/18).
