About This Item

New York: Holt Rinehart Winston, 1970. Hardcover. Good/Very Good. First edition. Ex-library copy lacking front and rear fly leaves, a few pages with substantial stains, pastedowns a bit skinned, a good only copy in a moderately age-toned, about very good dustwrapperwith light edgewear and toning at the edge of the rear flap. A landmark book and one of the scarcest first books of the 1970s in any genre. This title has taken its place among other notable books that have been banned from public circulation by those too small-minded, myopic, or lazy to distinguish between excellence and prurience. A nice example of the dustwrapper on the Nobel Laureate's scarce first novel. Morrison was the first African-American to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Synopsis

The Bluest Eye is a 1970 novel by American author Toni Morrison. It is Morrison's first novel, written while Morrison was teaching at Howard University and was raising her two sons on her own. The story is about a year in the life of a young black girl in Lorain, Ohio named Pecola Breedlove. It takes place against the backdrop of America's Midwest as well as in the years following the Great Depression.  Brutal in its depictions of racism, incest, and child molestation, The Bluest Eye has remained on the often-challenged and banned books list almost every year since its publication.
