A very bright attractive copy with immaculate contents.. Brown cloth boards, 659pp illustrated. 1.5kg. A full-scale documentary history of the Boer War and still the current standard work. His narrative is based on first-hand and largely unpublished sources. Documents in the Public Record Office, material in South African archives, newly discovered private papers of many of the major figures including Sir Redvers Buller and Lord Roberts, material compiled by the War Office Intelligence Dept., private letters from members of the British Cabinet, letters and diaries of those who fought in the war and tape-recorded memories of over 50 survivors. List of sources, bibliography, notes.

The war declared by the Boers of South Africa on October 11, 1899, gave the British, as Kipling said, 'No end of a lesson.' The public expected it to be over by Christmas. It proved to be the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and most humiliating war that Great Britain fought between 1815 and 1914.
