New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. First Edition. One of an edition of 571 numbered copies signed by the author Philip Guedella. Ownership signature. Marble boards with a gilt-stamped decorative cloth spine. Very good copy with some slight signs of use and edge wear. A collection of essay portraits on the wives of eight well-known Victorian figures including Carlyle, Gladstone, Arnold, Disraeli, Tennyson, Palmerston James, Swinburne, and De Goncourt. At the title page appears the following lines of verse: “Wives of great men all remind us / We can make our lives sublime, / And, departing, leave behind us / Footprints in the sands of time.”
