London: Leonard Smithers,, 1896. Octavo. Original red buckram, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Frontispiece on japon by Beardsley. Spine faded and minimally rolled, minor rubbing to very tips, top edge lightly dust toned, foxing to prelims, though not affecting frontispiece, and occasionally to contents; a very good, bright, copy. First edition of the author's first book of prose. A Book of Bargains is a collection of short, "elaborately written, fin de siècle" supernatural stories (Blieler 1265). O'Sullivan, though born in New York, completed his education in England, and lived in London throughout his adult life. He was close friends with Oscar Wilde, being fully integrated into his literary circle, and wrote an impassioned defence of Wilde, Aspects of Wilde, in 1936. Beardsley sent Smithers his drawing for the frontispiece of this work in mid-September 1896; "Here at last is the O'Sullivan picture. Radiant and compelling is it not? Beg Naumann [the engraver, Paul Naumann] to be careful with the dots in the face. You will see by the enclosed what passage I have dignified by my drawing" (p. 165). (The passage in question can be found in The Business of Madam Jahn.) Beardsley, who was "much struck by O'Sullivan's stories", went on to produce the cover design for O'Sullivan's second book of poetry, The Houses of Sin, in 1897. Bleiler 1265; Locke, vol. I, p. 170 ("macabre short stories, some but not all genuine fantasy"); Maas, Duncan, and Good, eds., The Letters of Aubrey Beardsley (1970).
