First edition. Red cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to the spine, with original card covers bound in. Hand-made brown end-papers with the watermark of "Abbey Mills Greenfield" (i.e. Abbey Mills papermill, Flintshire, Wales). Unobtrusive scratch to rear board otherwise binding, original covers and text in very good condition. With 8 black and white photographs.
The letters cover: How to Begin; What Shall I Collect ?; How to tell a First Edition; How to Tell if a Book is Perfect; How to Judge Values; How to Transform Mountains into Molehills; and A Short History of Book Production.
Described by Muir in his dedication to the book as a "typically English book, suggested by a Jew, written by a Scot, and published by an Irishman".
