The Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre, Printed by John Baskerville (Cambridge) for B. Dod (London) (BCP); John Baskerville (Birmingham) (Psalmes), 1762. [61] leaves. First Baskerville edition. ESTCT87252. Marbled endpapers. All page edges gilt, now worn. Bound in contemporary dark olive morocco. Elaborately gilt-tooled to cottage roof design, gilt now dulled and worn. Front hinge professionally repaired. Two first edition Baskerville printings bound together. A unique book. Baskerville was an innovative printer and typographer whose works are considered to be some of the most beautiful printed in the English language. Tributes to his genius as a printer include the font that bears his name, as well as nods by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Hound of the Baskervilles) and Umberto Eco (who named the protagonist in The Name of the Rose William of Baskerville).
