About This Item

Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1862. PHOTOS UPON REQUEST. The binding is in Fair condition only, as the leather covering the spine is missing. Hinges are weak. Contents is Very Good but for ink notes on two preliminary pages. [The notes discuss the 1864 auction of the library of author/book collector George Daniel (1789-1864) including first folio editions of Shakespeare's works. The sale realised £15,865. See DNB for more.] All other pages are clean and unmarked. NO foxing. A reading or rebacking/binding copy only of the uncommon 1862 first edition. Quarter-bound in brown calf over maroon cloth. Leather covering the spine is lacking. Original flat brown endpapers. Binder's ticket on the rear pastedown shows the book was bound by Burn, 37 & 38 Kirbys. The text pages are securely bound together, so rebacking or a entirely new binding could be added without the effort or expense of having to re-sew. From the front matter: "This book owes its existence to a concurrence of accidents. The author had the honour of contributing to Blackwood's Magazine some sketches of the ways of book-collectors, scholars, literary investigators, desultory readers, and other persons whose pursuits revolve round books and literature." Webber (p. 42) cites 1863 in error. Hart 189.. First Edition. Hardcover. Fair-Very Good condition. Illus. by NOT a library discard. viii, 384pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
