About This Item
New York: Viking Press, 1939. First edition. INSCRIBED BY HECHT on front endpaper, "To SHOLEM ASCH/ of the line of the Prophets/ my deep admiration/ Ben Hecht." A nice sentiment to Asch, the Polish-Jewish novelist, dramatist, and essayist. Both he and Hecht were prolific writers, more celebrated in their own lifetimes than now--but still a very good ASSOCIATION COPY. 8vo gold paper boards stamped in blue on front and spine; top edge black. In gold-foil dust jacket printed in blue and red. Endpapers slightly age darkened and offsets from binding glue to pastedown edges, otherwise very good or better with subtle toning along edges, few areas of light rubbing, and front cover top edge rubbed to board; in good or better dust jacket with edges rubbed, shallow chipping, few small internal tape repairs, and two tears with attendant creases affecting several letters of rear panel text with small pieces of tape. Still quite presentable.
