London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. First Edition. Large Octavo. 299pp., illustrated by Joseph Grego. Burton writes" From days immemorial the Queen of Weapons, a creator as well as a destroyer, carved out history, formed the nations, and shaped the world" The history of the sword from its birth to it progression, geographically and chronologically. Burton had planned at least one other volume maybe two to follow but left behind only his manuscripts. Bound in gray pictorial cloth depicting crossed swords and decorations in brown, pictorial gilt spine lettered in gilt, spine ends rubbed, corners rubbed, one rubbed though, black coated endpapers, bookseller's ticket partially worn away on front pastedown. spine darkened, some soiling, hinges fine. A very good copy.
