An interesting narrative detailing the author's trip across the plains with the Government Survey for the "best route to California," experiences in Montana, Wyoming and the Yellowstone country, and a collection of yarns and recollections told at the campfire by members of the survey, and by others who fell within the spell of its radiant glow - among them Donald McKay. Howes T435: "These tales -including a fine account of the fall of the Alamo - were told on a surveying expedition from Omaha, to the Yellowstone Country.
