London: Macmillan and Co., 1886. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Macmillan and Co., London, 1886. Three volumes. [iv], 244; [iv], 226; [iv], 232, [4] pp. The title page of Volume II is stamped: WITH THE PUBLISHER'S COMPLIMENTS. The three-decker first edition, which precedes the one volume edition, is truly rare: only 500 copies were printed, and then another 100 copies a month later. There are no identifiable distinctions between the two. James' satirical novel of the feminist movement, and one of the first American novels to allude to lesbian relationships. The novel was not well received in Boston. Volume I: Corners bumped on outer leaves, half-title and final pages lightly foxed, and the fore-edge of the half-title page chipped. Volume II: Corners bumped on outer leaves, half-title and final page of text chipped. Volume III: Corners bumped on outer leaves; some chipping along the edges of the four-page publisher's catalogue bound at back. Bound by Gray Parrot in three-quarter brown morocco, with green linen cloth, in the spirit of the period. The binding is in Fine condition.
