Original illustrated blue cloth with b/w photograph laid to cover, gilt and black lettering, black ruling on cover, illustration with gilt and black lettering on spine. Frontispiece photograph. Publisher's device on title page. With thirty-seven illustrations (on thirty plates) from photographs taken by the U.S. Geological Survey. "The adventures in this volume, startling as they may seem, were recounted to the author by the very men who underwent them; slight details only being changed to fit them into rapid sequence with which they have to be compressed in the pages of a book." (Author). Light wear along edges of binding. Brief 1917 inscription on front free endpaper. Very light age-toning of block.
