About This Item

Henley: Brakspear & Co, 1993. Octavo (21.5 x 14 cm.), viii, 103 pages. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A history of the Brakspear brewery, founded in 1779, and issued on the bicentennial of the business. Henley, on the coach route from London to Oxford, served many prestigious travelers, including James Boswell, and George IV was said to have eaten "fourteen mutton chops at a single sitting". William Shenston immortalized the Inns of Henley, with the lines, "Who'er has travell'd life's dull round / Where'er his stages may have been / May sigh to this he still has found / The warmest welcome at an inn." Slightest edgwear to wrappers (no clothbound issue was forthcoming); near fine. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "with much love f. all the Ogilvy clan, from Francis Sheppard". [OCLC records numerous records in the Great Britain, but just four copies in the US].
