Germany.. No date. 1735- 1745.. Engraving with mezzotint, printed in color with additional handcolor, image size 12 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches on sheet 15 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. A few faint foxed spots to outer margins (mainly outside plate area); very good condition. Single red cabbage plant, plate No. 258 from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann " Phytanthoza Iconographia ", printed on thick laid paper. Dunthorne (#327) notes that plates from this work represent "some of the earliest examples of color printing from a single plate", many of them printed by a combination of line engraving and mezzotint. The initial S at lower right indicates the artist engraver Abraham Seutter (ca. 1690-1747). .
