The Portuguese translation of the second volume of "Narrative of services on the liberation of Chili, Peru and Brazil" by Thomas Cochrane, Earl of Dundonald (1775-1860), the commander of the Chilean navy from 1818-1823, and of the Brazilian navy from 1823-1825. A rare Quito imprint, on education of the natives. 1845. Quito. Ex typografia Huius P. ac Pont. Universitatis. In 12vo (146 mm x 97 mm). 1 ff. + 277. Contemporary Ecuatorian[¿] calf. Last folio with lower bottom restored, title restored in inner margin, a few foxing spots, but generally fine. A particularly rare work, and apparently the first Quito edition; first printed in Lima (Medina 1838) in 1797 and Madrid in 1751. None of both South American editions are present in Spanish Libraries, it´s working purpose –of teaching religion to natives- might account for the scarcity. The text is printed in Latin for the most part this is not common for Latin American books, the vernacular usually being the preferred printing language.
