East London 2014.. Mint condition in matching dustwrapper.. 134pp illustrated colour oblong 4to. Joseph Newey served the Public Works Dept of the Cape Colony for 32 years, finally as Chief Inspector of Public Works. His numerous stone arch bridges and iron lattice girder bridges were built for ox wagons and horse-drawn vehicles. Rendered obsolete by the advent of the motor car and the dual lane roadways, many of his bridges survive as a legacy. He was involved in virtually every road bridge erected in the Eastern Cape during the last quarter of the 19thC. Well illustrated with construction drawings, modern & contemporary photographs & other illustrations.
